Hokuahi Lawns Designs a Makaha Backyard Oasis

  Hawaii Home Remodeling, February 2018

Morning light casts a warm glow onto a lush backyard in Makaha, where coconut trees sway gently in the balmy air. The shimmering cerulean water along Oahu’s leeward coast is just steps away, oftentimes revealing sea life such as turtles, whales and monk seals.

  Hidden Sanctuary

    Hawaii Home Remodeling, November 2017

Step into the courtyard of this modern home and you’d never know that one of Oahu’s busiest malls is just across the street. No traffic noises — honking horns, revved up cars — all you hear is the sound of gurgling water, the breeze and an occasional chirping bird.

 Plant Perfect

  Hawaii Home Remodeling, September 2017

It all started over a sandwich.
“There’s a Subway near where I live in Waipahu, and I go there all the time,” says landscaper Gary Shinn of Hokuahi Lawns. “That’s when I saw the vacant, fenced-in space near the Times Supermarket and it got me to thinking.”  One short month later, Shinn opened up the shop.

Positively Perfect May 2014
Landscaping & Water Features, Outside, Outside Hawaii Home Remodeling
Issue:  May 2014 by Brandi Benson

"After more than a decade, this Waimanalo landscape continues to evolve.
From serene koi ponds to a towering, 15-foot waterfall, there are amazing discoveries at every turn in this secluded home by the beach in Waimanalo. The dramatic landscape draws in visitors and demands their full attention. From the custom roof swooping across the house — reflecting the movements of nearby Waimanalo Bay — to the water features that immerse them into a tangible paradise, they can’t help but stop and stare, mouths agape."

Growing Businesses
Hawaii Business   Nov, 2005
David K. Choo

There aren’t too many companies that get their names from a building or a job site. But in Gary Shinn’s case, Hokuahi, “flaming star” in Hawaiian and the name of an apartment complex in Mililani, seemed wholly appropriate. You see, Shinn and his co-workers had just landed a maintenance contract with the celestial apartment house and, by coincidence, they were all moonlighting fire fighters.

The Sound of Angels Singing
Hawaii Remodeling, February, 2001

"It's been said that the sound of running water is like the voices of angels singing, which may explain the popularity of water feature's with Hawaii's homeowners.  Or it could be the Asian influence of blending nature into the home by using ponds and waterfalls.  And then again, it could be the Polynesian way of being close to the land that nourishes us all and using elements of nature to soften our suburban neighborhoods.

Creating a Backyard Waterfall and Spa Garden
Hawaii Remodeling, January 1999

"Start with the natural tranquility of a cascading waterfall, as it tumbles playfully into a heated whirlpool.  Surround it with heaping portions of the unique vegetation found in lush tropical gardens.  Use low voltage spotlights to reflect light off the cascading water and accentuate the surrounding palms.  Add ample servings of people.  And - voila -- you have just created the ultimate in back yard beauty, entertainment and relaxation"
